NRK TV Interview

EXT Grieghallen

Eirik: Now we're in "Grieghallen lydstudio". A classic. We could choose between studios all around the world...or...the plans said 'Rome or New York'...and then we chose this studio, cause it's two hundred meters from my home.

(Davide: Ok..try another one)

Eirik: This studio is full of weird stuff and instruments, and we tryout everything we can lay our hands on. And then there's a drumset - and we enjoy playing it.

(Eirik playing drums)

Erlend: When we started that "Toxic Girl" tune, Eirik was just playing the drums. And he played something unbelievably simple.... Hey, where's the rug?

Eirik (off): We had to remove it.

Erlend: Why?

Eirik (off): Otherwise you couldn't see it was drumset.

Erlend: Well...television is something special.. you don't want to portray things as they really are, no way...

Toxic Girl video

Erlend cont. : The primary task of the drum is ...

Eirik: Are you trying to teach me this?

Erlend: NO! No, I'm not trying to do that...I'm ...I'm trying to teach these guys some...

Eirik (interrupting): Well, talk into the camera, mate

Erlend: But if I talk directly to the camera, I don't know if I can act naturally....jerk!

Toxic Girl video cont.

Eirik (off): I guess we were a bit dogmatic about our music back then...Dogma 95...hehe...

Eirik cont.: ...and we were very minimalistic. This time...well..eh..I guess it started when we made the remix of Cornelius -

Drop live at Hulen

Eirik cont. (off): ...and that was two years ago. At that time we realized it was fun just to play around with stuff in the studio, and just experiment with all the instruments that was available.

Drop live at Hulen cont.

Eirik (off): And at that point I got my mind set on experimenting and having fun the next time we recorded an album. Just adding stuff all the time.

Eirik: But, it will sound like us. It will.

Erlend Øye: Sudden Rush video

Erlend: Because I released that electronica record, it's me, now, that is most keen on keeping things as simple as possible.

Cause I'm done with all the experiments, and have understood that all things has is place, and that's ok! - but ...done that.

Erlend cont. (off): And I see that the more I work with music thats full of ...stuff..., then I really see the value of music with simple and clear aestethics.

Rehearsing "Gold in the Air of Summer"

Eirik: This key is really hard on the piano.

Erlend: He is gonna play something on this tune that's a bit improvised, but in order not to fuck things up during a really good take - in case he plays a bad note -, he's gonna put some stickers onto the keyboard.

Eirik: Well, it's really easy to play in C major and A minor and so on the piano... but once we move into G sharp minor like we're playing now...G sharp minor...is that it?

No, its G sharp major? Eh...I really don't have a clue. Anyway, I need some aid.

Recording start of "Gold in the Air of Summer".

Eirik: Our record company is Virgin UK, and they're like a really big factory. So they needed to have a budget and know exactly what was gonna happen the next few months.

So we like...stumbled in here and just wanted to hang around untill things were wrapped up. Obviously we didn't know how long time that was gonna take, but they insisted on a figure. "How long time did we need?" And we said...400 hours, maybe?

Both: Four - hundred - hours.

Erlend: Four, hundred times over.

Eirik: It is, actually. Four hundered written the old way.

Erlend: And now we're about.....here!

Recording middle of "Gold in the Air of Summer".

Erlend (off): I think the biggest difference between this album and the last one is that this one's a bit faster.

Eirik (off): Yeah, this record is slightly fresher, but what you've heard tonight have been a slow number.
