Bergens Tidende Interview

Venstre loses popstar

Kings of Convenience member Eirik Glambek Bøe wants to resign from the Venstre party list. Two carriers and an expected baby in August takes too much time.

Eirik Glambek Bøe was in fourth place in the Venstre party list in Bergen, he has now asked to resign. The leader of the election committee, Herman Friele, is not too happy with this. - We are sending the wrong signal to teenagers when you can run away from your responsibility in this way, he says. Last autumn Bøe was shown off with pride as the Venstre's new vote magnet. Bøe who has engaged himself in a number of city development cases in Bergen, was supposed to attract young urban voters. Now the  voting magnet is disappearing.

Must possibly move
-   We are expecting a child in the end of August and this is coming on top of a number of other things, which means that there just won't be enough time, says Bøe.

The well known musician has a musical career to take care of, which involves a lot of traveling. In addition he is a trained psychologist.

-   I have a very strong wish to engage politically and when I said yes, I had enough spare time for that. But now this baby will come as well, and then there won't be enough time for politics.

In addition Bøe's girlfriend will soon start working, and the possibilty of moving will possibly increase. And if Bøe is not living in Bergen, he will have to be dismissed from a possible place in the city council.

Heavy hearted
-   You aren't the only politician who struggles getting time to do everything, so why should you be relieved?

-  I am aware that my reason is similar to many others, but the combination of large amounts of traveling (Kings of Convenience are releasing a new album) and the duties of taking care of the baby will lead to me not attending many meetings.

Bøe says he did not make the decision light-heartedly. His involvement for the city is big. At the same time he means that by resigning he avoids many problems.

-  I could have been on the list, gone to election and then resigned my position, but I think that is a little unfair.

Understanding
City councillor Hans Carl Tveit, who also is close to the top of Venstre party list, has understanding in Bøe's decision.

- I'm orientated about his resigning from the list. As I can understand it, it has to do with his wife starting work. They are moving from town and at the same time expecting a child, says Tveit.

-  Wouldn't it be better if he participated in the campaign and resigned when he had to?

- Both him and us wants to play with open cards when the situation has come to what it has. We don't wish to start a campaign with someone we knew couldn't sit for the whole period.

«Running away from responsibilities»
Yesterday the election committee decided to let Bøe get off the list, but mayor Herman Friele, who is the leader of the council, is not happy that «young free people» can resign from the commune election list.

-  It has become too easy when a person who is politically engaged and motivated can leave and resign because he has a baby.

Friele means that there obviously should be stricter demands for those that wish to leave, but realizes that guidelines open for possibilities with the type of reasoning that Bøe has given.

- I mean there is a need of stricter rules. This is an important task for society, that you can't avoid just like that. We are sending the wrong signal to teenagers when you can run away from your responsibility in this way.
